Dispersant Chemical

Oil spill dispersants are specially formulated liquid chemical products used to reduce the spread and impact of petroleum slicks on water. Typically containing surfactants and solvents, dispersants lower the interfacial tension between oil and water, allowing wave action to break floating oil into small droplets. These droplets become suspended in the water column, where they dilute and become more accessible to naturally occurring microorganisms that can biodegrade petroleum components.

Dispersants are generally applied by specialized aircraft or vessels equipped with calibrated spray systems. They are most effective on fresh, light to medium crude oils and become less effective as oil weathers, thickens, or forms stable emulsions. Their performance depends on oil composition, temperature, salinity, wave energy, and application technique.

Chemical dispersants do not physically remove oil from the environment. Instead, they redistribute it from the surface into the water column, potentially reducing exposure of seabirds, shorelines, and coastal habitats while increasing exposure for organisms below the surface. Consequently, their use requires careful environmental assessment, regulatory authorization, and operational monitoring.

Dispersants are one response option alongside containment booms, mechanical skimmers, and controlled burning. When used appropriately, they can help responders manage major offshore spills where mechanical recovery alone may be insufficient.
